Brian Austin

Brian Austin - Lead Guitarist, Soylent RedBrian was born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1980.  He grew up in Chamblee, Georgia and moved to Marietta, Georgia in high school, which are both located in the Metro Atlanta area.  His father is a professional guitarist and he always loved guitar-heavy music like Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden (and many more), so he always wanted to learn.

He grew up listening to classic rock with his parents.  Instead of rebelling against what they listened to, he really enjoyed it.  Before he even knew what the songs were called or who they were by, he already loved The Beatles, The Who, Cream, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Allman Brothers, and many others.  Then, as a teenager in the early 90’s, he saw popular music go from Vanilla Ice and Paula Abdul to Pearl Jam and Nirvana.  He absolutely fell in love with them and bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Jane’s Addiction, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, Weezer, etc. and of course still listens to them to this day.  He loved this music so much, the old and the new, that he eventually wanted to make some of his own.

Throughout college in Athens, Georgia at UGA, he played around and learned a few chords and scales, and then finally started playing everyday around September of 2003.  He says he finally understood what he was supposed to be doing with music and has never looked back.

A few years later he was hanging out with his cousin Nick, and he remembered that Nick plays the drums.  He said, “I have a drum set over at my house.  Why don’t you come jam with me sometime?”  They both instantly had the right chemistry, mixing with their passion for music, and songs started forming.  They decided they needed a bass player.  Rhianna is one of Brian’s long time friends, and she was hanging out over at the house playing guitar.  Nick suggested that she play bass with them, and she said she’d give it a shot.  She instantly fell right in with the same chemistry and spark, and they started coming up with several songs right off the bat.  Soylent Red was born.

Brian enjoys jamming with the band, playing guitar, and writing songs.  “Soylent Red has given me an artistic outlet that I was not aware of before.  Music is a deeper form of communication.  It's similar in that respect to other art forms.  Our bodies are the brushes, our instruments the canvas, and the songs are the paintings.  I hope to continue to do what I love sharing music with people, and maybe add a little something good to the world.”

"These guys are talented and it’s fairly easy to spot the talent..."

--Rhonda Readence, 2011

"Atlanta trio Soylent Red dig deep into the dirt of their home state and come up with a new spin on southern music...The familiar sounds of southern gothic blues and sun-fueled soul are heard throughout the album’s seven tracks, which blend several beloved styles into one unique concoction."

--Bryan Rodgers, 2011
